Merry Christmas! or Good-bye Vox!

  • Dec 25, 2008

I know it's been awhile, but I have a pretty good reason. I ended up switching my blog over to Wordpress. Since Vox doesn't export posts, I had to manually copy over every post to the new blog. I didn't want to keep posting over here since that would mean more to copy!

Anyways, I hope you'll continue reading over at my new digs (anyone? anyone?).

Quick Knits

I just realized I am no longer obliged to post once a week anymore. The Fall Swap is over (sad!) and so is the blogging requirement. I really hope I don't begin slacking, but I don't think I will. Once a week is reasonable, as long as I keep up the knitting progress!

I finished two things this weekend. The first is a charity knit, for the Seamen's Church Institute's Christmas at Sea drive. It's sponsored by Eat. Sleep. Knit. and they're offering store credit for any hat they receive by Friday. I'd been meaning to do a charity knit this season, so the store credit was an added bonus! I ended up using the rest of the yarn from Dave's Turn a Square hat since the hat had to be gender-neutral.

Pattern: Oliver's Cap

Source: Seamen's Church Institute

Yarn: Valley Yarns Northampton (partial skein) in Fawn

Needles: US 8 DPNs

Mods: None

Notes: A very quick and easy knit, super generic. Definitely a go-to pattern, and free to boot!

If you can believe it, I finished something else, a Christmas gift even! Shocking! My brother requested a scarf in his high school's colors. I despise knitting stockinette scarfs (so boring) but I wanted something quick, so I decided to try knitting it garter stitch, length-wise on a large circular needle. My first pattern!

Andrew's School Spirit Scarf

Pattern: My Own!

Yarn: Cascade 220 in Navy and Gray (2 skeins of each)

Needles: US 15 on a very large circular needle (I didn't measure since I used my Denise needles.)

Notes: Here's the pattern, very basic!

Holding 2 stands together, CO 180 stitches.

Knit 5 rows of navy.

Knit 3 rows of gray.

Knit 4 rows of navy.

BO!

Yes, I feel accomplished. Go me! Now I just need to figure out what's next on the never-ending knitting queue.

Oh, Vox has been driving me crazy lately. The whole interface is frustrating, it'll suddenly not let me edit text or delete a picture. I want to switch over to another blogging site. Any recommendations?

Sorry readers, but I was kinda involved with this for awhile.

I'm in the process of uploading the pictures to Flickr... knowing my internet connection, it may take awhile. I took almost 400 pictures!

The plane ride was good for some knitting.  I started a new sock, finally getting on that Monkey sock train everyone's been on.

Monkey sock, finally!
Monkey sock, finally!
I haven't really been working on it much since I've gotten home. I wonder how long until I have a finished pair? Next Socktoberfest maybe? The yarn is gorgeous, by the way. Pagewood Farms in Yukon. Not too shabby for a last-minute add to the shopping cart to get free shipping!

In the meantime, I've been working on the super secret wedding present lately. I finally saw the recipient last week after a dreadfully long 2.5 years! Dang Peace Corps, separating our loved ones. :)

It'll be a little while longer before it's finished, but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Only 12 more boring repeats!

Not like you can tell I made any progress.

Just in time for vacation! I'm dragging taking Dave to Disney World next weekend. It's his first time and we'll be visiting Tracey there as a bonus. Can't wait! Only 4 more days...

Happy Halloween!

I decided against the wig and went with a different costume instead: a LOLcat! You can't see my shirt, but I pretty much ripped off that shirt I linked to... I'll try to get a complete picture when I get home. It's hard to take a length-wise picture with a camera phone!

I made those ears last night while watching TV. They were wicked easy! I picked up some felt at the mall, and whip stitched them together. I added some of my jewelry wire for stability and wired them onto a headband. I was finished with the whole costume by 9!

There are tons of kids running around work today, a lot of the women brought them in to trick-or-treat around our cubicles. Of course, this is the one day I have a TON of work and strapped to my desk. Oh well!

In knitting news, I highly doubt I'll be able to finish the entire foot of the second sock by tonight for Socktoberfest. I don't really feel bad since I know I'll be able to finish it by next week. It's a miracle I finished a pair of socks in 6 weeks!

Yay for Halloween! It totally got me in the holiday mood. And the yarn is so autumn-y!

I can't wait to figure out what to make with it. The Knit Picks Gloss is practically begging to be Little Pumpkin socks (Ravelry link), but I'm going to have to hold off. I have Christmas knitting to begin!

Speaking of, I'm off to WEBS and the Fiber Twist today. Yay for more yarn opportunities!

I'm only wearing one sock!

That's because I actually finished a sock that fits me. And it only took me weeks, not years.

I've already cast one the second sock, so there's hope that the pair will be finished by the end of Socktoberfest.

As for the yarn porn I promised, here you go!

And because I'd rather be uploading pictures than starting my advanced taxation homework, here's evidence of some wicked wind we had today. There's only a difference of a day or two of my taking these pictures!

I'm sad, because it's only a matter of time before ALL the trees lose their leaves and they are barren and depressing. I guess that means snow is on its way?

I *do* love snow...

Bye-Bye $80

I just blew $80 on yarn. On four absolutely gorgeous skeins of sock yarn. I totally justified this purchase two ways:

1) Today's pay day!

2) I just may be able to give up one or two skeins to send to my swap pal. We'll see.

Pretty picture post to come soon! ;o)

Just sitting here knitting...

I'm taking advantage of this warm Sunday evening to knit on Dave's Turn a Square hat (while he's not around!) and watch some Amazing Race reruns. I'm totally getting excited for the new season which starts tonight! The Amazing Race is one reality show which doesn't get old, plus it's the one show my Mom and I try to watch together. Usually we TiVo everything, so it's definitely not a normal thing for us!

I might as well answer the Falling for Ewe Swap Question #3:
What meals or foods mean ‘Fall’ to you?

I just got back from the Big E, a huge New England fair in the next city over from me. There's SO much food that it's near impossible to eat everything you want to! I actually went twice this year, and I still didn't get a chance to buy the fried oreos I've been thinking about all year! :)

Since the fair always takes place at the beginning of Autumn, there's a lot of food that gets me excited about fall. I love the loaded baked potatoes in the Maine building, the Del's Lemonade in Rhode Island, everything maple from Vermont, fried mushrooms, friend dough... everything fried! Yum!

The other thing I absolutely love about Autumn is Pumpkin Spice coffee, especially from Green Mountain Coffee Roasters. Sooo good, especially on a chilly morning going to work!

Can't forget the kettle corn love! (Also taken in 2006)
